Warpcon 21, January 28th to 30th, 2011

So, I took part in my fifth Warpcon, Warpcon 21. It happened to be Nick Meade’s 21st Birthday too, so I’m amazed his liver survived. 🙂

I brought the Orks with me to Warpcon, and came 41st out of 65 finishers.

The List:

HQ:
Warboss; Twin-Linked Shoota, Power Klaw, ‘Eavy Armour, Bosspole, Stikkbombs. (Yeah, stikkbombs. WTF was I thinking?)
Big Mek; Shokk Attack Gun (for the lulz.), Bosspole

Elites:
1: Lootass x 8; Deffguns
2: Lootas x 8; Deffguns

Troops:
1: Boys x 12; 10 Shootas; 1 Big Shoota, 1 Nob; Klaw, Bosspole; Trukk; Red Paint, Reinforced Ram, Armour Plates, Boarding Plank
2: Boys x 12; 10 Shootas; 1 Big Shoota, 1 Nob; Klaw, Bosspole; Trukk; Red Paint, Reinforced Ram, Armour Plates, Boarding Plank
3: Boys x 12; 10 Shootas; 1 Big Shoota, 1 Nob; Klaw, Bosspole; Trukk; Red Paint, Reinforced Ram, Armour Plates, Boarding Plank
4: Boys x 11; 10 Sluggas & Choppas; 1 Rokkit Boy; Trukk; Red Paint, Reinforced Ram, Armour Plates, Boarding Plank

2: Warbikers x 5; Twin Linked Dakkaguns; 1 Nob, Power Klaw, Bosspole

Heavy:
1: Killa Kan x 2; Dreadnaught CCW, Grotzooka, Armour Plates
2: Killa Kan x 2; Dreadnaught CCW, Grotzooka, Armour Plates
(Yes, its been pointed out to me that as a squadron they get the effect of armour plates for free, saving me 40 points)

The Games:
5 rounds, random 1st round, Swiss System afterwards:

Round 1: Me VS Derek Barry: Deathwing as Vanilla Marines (2 raider list). Result: 15 to 5 Win in my Favour. Current Battle Score: 15.
The one thing I took away from this game is that Derek hates my dice. 🙂
Boarding planks are worth it for crumping land raiders on the run.

Round 2: Me VS Eoin O’Mahony: Necrons with that F&%&$ of a Deceiver. Result: 15 to 5 Loss in my Favour. Current Battle Score: 20.
What I took away: Basically, everything on the table…
The game with Eoin was great fun, I lost, but as it was a Killpoints game, I came away with 4 Killpoints to his 6. Deceiver is a PITA.

Round 3: Me VS Mike Whiffen: Imp Guard. 1 Valk List. Result: 17 to 3 Loss in my Favour. Current Battle Score: 23.
What I took away: It’s possible to hide my entire list behind 2 buildings. 🙂 That huge Guard Leman Russ variant (Punisher, I think?) is like an AV 13 Loota Squad…

That was Day 1. By the end of it my back was speaking to me in 3 languages, all dialects of “Ow”. I’d had a lot of fun, despite 2 losses, and was confident that I could get at least 1 more win to salvage my pride.

After a decent night’s sleep, I began Day 2.

Round 4: Me VS Small Dave: Blood Angels, Descent of Angels list. Result: 17 to 3 win in my Favour. Current Battle Score: 40.
What I took away: Deff Dredds can be awesome, and this one survived 4 rounds of combat with 2 Thunder hammers and a fist. 🙂
Dave thought I would castle in the Draw Round. I’m an Ork player with 4 troop choices that can score. He took out 1. The other 3 proceeded to show why Orks Charge, and Charge often. Also, disembark 2″, Move 6″, Run 6″ and Waaagh is a great way of claiming an objective, turn 7…

Round 5: Me VS Mervyn Murphy: Space Wolves. Jaws List. Result: 17 to 3 Loss in my Favour. Final Battle Score: 43.
What I took away: Puppies are Shooty and Assaulty. Shoot the Assaulty and Assault the Shooty seems to be the best way. Jaws is a PITA. Merv schooled me, but it was a fun game nonetheless.

Final Placing: I think, due to scoring issues with the organisers that it’s best to avoid, I came 41st. That’s a year on year improvement for me. And that was a substandard, non-cookie cutter list.
